Manganese is a light grey hard metal identified with the symbol Mn in the periodic table. In addition to being hard, it is characterized by brittleness, heat resistance and by being susceptible to oxidation. It is one of the most common elements in the Earth’s crust, and it also plays an essential role in the human body. It does not occur naturally in its pure form but instead virtually always as part of iron ores.
Pyrolusite is the main mineral of manganese. Rhodochrosite with its beautiful pink colour is one of most visually interesting minerals.
Manganese is a naturally abundant metal. It is commonly used in steel production but is becoming increasingly important for electric vehicles. However, it must be processed to obtain high-purity products, and this is where we see the huge potential of the Chvaletice manganese on the world market.
The greatest current global producers of manganese ore South Africa, China, Australia and Gabon.
Manganese is globally traded on markets in the form of ore, slag, ferromanganese, silicomanganese, or in the refined (purified) form.
Refined manganese products include electrolytic manganese metal (EMM). It is used as an alloy in the production of stainless steel and aluminium, and increasingly as part of lithium-ion battery solutions for electric vehicles. Today, roughly 98% of its global production takes place in China.
Our project at the Chvaletice-Trnávka site is focused on the production of high-purity electrolytic manganese metal (high-purity EMM, HPEMM). Currently, it has an overall share in the production of electrolytic metal manganese of about 2%, however, further growth is anticipated in connection to the increasing demand for high-purity manganese products intended for technologically advanced solutions.
We are planning to further process approximately two-thirds of our high-purity electrolytic metal manganese (HPEMM) production into high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM), which is used by most lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
The term high-purity manganese (HPM) refers to a group of highly refined products necessary for the production of the majority of lithium-ion batteries. It is a specialized product very different from the primary manganese ore used in the steel industry or agriculture.
We want to supply the high-purity electrolytic manganese metal and manganese sulphate produced at our plant to customers particularly for the production of batteries in the dynamically developing electric vehicle industry.
